As a seasoned movie enthusiast and connoisseur of Hollywood gossip, I must say that the ongoing saga of Kanguva’s release has certainly piqued my interest. The legal troubles surrounding this film are reminiscent of an old-school mobster flick, with producers and investors locked in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.
The movie titled “Kanguva,” featuring Suriya and Bobby Deol, is scheduled for release on November 14th. However, it’s been reported that the film is embroiled in legal issues. As per a report from Times of India, the Madras High Court has ordered a halt to the release until the producers deposit INR 20 crores with the court’s official assignee.
According to the court’s statement, as reported by the publication, “If the producer pays 20 crores or less by the end of November 13th, they will be allowed to screen the film Kanguva. However, it is a requirement that they provide an account of the film’s earnings within a week following its release.
Ever since I found out about it, I’ve been utterly captivated by this tale. It all began back in 2011 when KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green struck a deal with Arjunlal Sunderdas for the making of a movie. An impressive initial investment of Rs 40 crore was poured into this project, but unfortunately, Arjunlal decided to part ways, having contributed only Rs 12.85 crore towards it. Tragically, he faced financial troubles and became insolvent. In response, the Madras High Court appointed an official assignee in 2014 to handle his assets and liabilities.
Following a detailed examination of Arjunlal’s financial obligations and possessions, the designated party submitted an application in the High Court, asking for a command directing KE Gnanavel Raja to settle a debt of approximately Rs 10.35 crore, including an additional 18% interest. The court granted this application in 2019, instructing the producer to repay the full amount, inclusive of interest, to the appointed assignee.
Nevertheless, the person assigned could only recoup 3.93 crores following Thangalaan’s release. As a result, they had to submit a fresh petition demanding the entire unpaid amount prior to the premiere of the film featuring Suriya, titled Kanguva.
Following the request, the court stated, according to the report, “Since there’s no other option available, this court must issue an order preventing the production company from releasing the film ‘Kanguva’ until they fulfill their debt obligations.
More details about the case against Kanguva’s release are still awaited.
