The Karnataka State government filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of India, aiming to overturn a previous ruling that granted bail to Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavithra Gowda, and other accused. However, on January 24, 2025, the top court decided not to cancel the existing bail order.
According to a report from The Hindu, Justice JB Pardiwala’s hearing declined to issue a stay order for the actors and other defendants involved in the case. The court argued that granting a stay order could effectively overturn the existing bail orders.
In response to the state government’s request to revoke the bails of the actors and other defendants, the Indian Supreme Court has promised to review the state’s case against the High Court’s decision. Furthermore, the court will send a formal inquiry to Darshan regarding the matter.
As stated in the report, senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, speaking on behalf of the state government, claimed that the High Court had “minimized” or “overlooked” the case against Darshan and others. Furthermore, the state contended that if bail were granted to the other defendants, they might use this decision as a precedent.
In response, the Supreme Court bench stated, “If any co-defendant requests bail while facing charges, the court handling the case should not rely on the order we are currently reviewing. Instead, each bail request should be evaluated based on its individual merits.
It’s clarified that Darshan Thoogudeepa, one of the suspects in the Renukaswamy murder case, was released on bail by the Karnataka High Court on December 13, 2024. Alongside Darshan, his alleged lover and main suspect Pavithra Gowda, as well as other defendants, were also granted bail.
In June 2024, Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavitha Gowda, and others were arrested by the Karnataka police following allegations of murdering a pharmacist named Renukaswamy. It seems that Renukaswamy had made inappropriate remarks towards Gowda, which escalated into an argument, culminating in his death after suffering abuse.
