Superman’s James Gunn Found David Corenswet While Watching This Movie

In his recent guest appearance, director James Gunn shared how he found his Superman actor, David Corenswet, who will make his debut in the initial big-screen installment of the budding DC Universe, playing the legendary role of Superman/Clark Kent. This casting choice was always crucial for the success of the franchise given the iconic status of this character.

James Gunn discovered David Corenswet when he saw the actor in Pearl

In an appearance on JM Video Club (through Konbini), Gunn discussed his inspirations as a filmmaker during a 30-minute segment. He specifically mentioned the 2022 horror film Pearl, praising Corenswet’s portrayal of the Projectionist in the movie and suggesting that the actor could embody Superman.

In simpler terms, “Gunn mentioned that he had been watching the movie ‘Pearl’ which he found excellent. He also noticed a character named The Projectionist who reminded him of Superman. He then looked up the actor’s name on IMDb and requested for him to be brought in for a role.

Initially, I had someone else in mind for the Superman role, but their audition didn’t quite impress me, so I decided to look elsewhere. Then, I came across Tyler Hoechlin’s audition tape, and let me tell you, he was simply amazing and hilarious!

Significantly, Pearl functions as a precursor to the 2022 release of X and is the second installment in the X film franchise. Ti West directed this production based on a script he wrote alongside Mia Goth, who also plays the title character in the film.

Prior to his role as Superman, Corenswet had a diverse acting portfolio consisting of Affairs of State (2018), Look Both Ways (2022), The Politician on Netflix, and Hollywood’s Netflix miniseries. In June 2023, it was revealed that he landed the part of Superman in Gunn’s film. Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman has garnered significant praise, with Matt Morrison from SuperHeroHype remarking that his interpretation could potentially be “one of the best” cinematic representations of the iconic character.
