A recently disclosed sequence has been flagged for deletion in James Gunn’s Superman ahead of its Indian premiere. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requested the elimination of a 33-second portion before the movie’s public screening, owing to issues with the content.
Why Superman’s India release got censored
The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given James Gunn’s Superman the green light for screening in India on July 7, 2025, but with a U/A 13+ rating. Nevertheless, they required the elimination of 41 seconds worth of content, such as a 33-second “explicit visual” split across two scenes and an eight-second frame showing an offensive gesture, which will be replaced by a brief, two-second substitute clip.
According to a trade source, who spoke to Bollywood Hungama, “At the premiere on July 9, viewers seemed displeased with the edit. It appeared as though certain parts had been removed. Additionally, they were puzzled as to why one section of a kissing scene was kept uncensored while another was censored.
It’s said that the restricted parts of the Superman storyline apparently featured two instances of Clark Kent and Lois Lane exchanging affectionate kisses – one at her apartment and another post-battle while they were both airborne.
According to the instructions from the Cinema Board of Certification, the studio was asked to remove specific offensive language, following recent censorship guidelines that have been applied to Hollywood films shown in India. The revised runtime, which includes all required edits, is now set at 130 minutes and 44 seconds, equating to 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 44 seconds.
In this movie, David Corenswet acts as Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult portray Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Additionally, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock assume the roles of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl respectively.
In comparable situations, the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has muted five offensive words in Marvel’s Thunderbolts and removed allegedly explicit language from Mission: Impossible – Fallout (The Final Reckoning). A source at Bollywood Hungama reported that film studios often “foresee” these cuts and opt to “self-edit” their content. For instance, F1: The Movie changed a middle finger emoji into a fist bump, and the studio made changes to Mickey 17 prior to submission.
Superman released in India and globally on July 11, 2025.
