With the upcoming theater release of Superman, early box office forecasts show a variety of possible outcomes for DC Studios’ initial reboot under James Gunn. Some projections indicate an opening that might outshine Man of Steel, while others foresee a lower domestic debut falling short of $100 million, contingent on audience response and final promotional drive.
Superman’s latest box office predictions revealed
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s expected that James Gunn’s version of Superman will rake in approximately $135 million during its opening weekend at U.S. theaters, as per the National Research Group (NRG)’s forecasts.
According to NRG’s estimation, the tracking range for this project is between $125 million and $145 million. This forecast positions the new Superman film above the previous solo Superman movie, Man of Steel ($116.6 million), but below Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).
According to certain studio insiders and distributors, estimates for Captain America: Brave New World’s opening weekend earnings suggest a range between $90 million and $125 million. As reported by Deadline, the potential earnings for Captain America are currently 71% higher than Superman’s at the same stage of production, with Superman having opened with $88.8 million. In comparison, The Batman opened with $134 million in 2022, which is 64% more than what Superman earned initially.
Even though initial predictions suggested otherwise, it appears that pre-sales for Superman surpassed those of The Fantastic Four: First Steps during their first 24 hours. This includes Amazon Prime Early Access screenings on July 8th. According to distribution reports, Superman set the record for the highest advance ticket sales of the year in just its first day (as reported by Deadline).
Over the years, Superman films have amassed approximately $2.56 billion worldwide across seven different movies. Specifically, Man of Steel generated a staggering $670 million in global revenue, while Batman v Superman raked in an even more impressive $874.3 million. If the upcoming Superman film manages to open with a box office take of around $135 million, it will surpass The Batman’s opening earnings ($134 million) and also outdo Suicide Squad ($133.7 million), making it the fourth-highest DC film debut not accounting for inflation.
During an interview with The Rolling Stone, James Gunn expressed his satisfaction with his upcoming DC Studios film by saying, “This is the first movie from our studio, and I’d be thrilled if it doubles its budget.” He further mentioned, “My main goal is to recoup my investment. I’ll be content if that happens.
Superman opens in North America on July 11, 2025.
