Superman Trailer: James Gunn Clarifies Confusion Around Rick Flag’s Role in DCU

Ever since the unveiling of the Superman trailer, fans have been speculating about whether Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr., holds the position of Secretary of Defense or directs ARGUS within the DC Universe. It was first introduced that Grillo would be part of the rebooted DCU in the animated series Creature Commandoes. Additionally, his character, Rick Flag Sr., is also set to appear in Peacemaker Season 2, which is scheduled for release in August 2025, alongside Superman.

James Gunn says Rick Flag Sr. is not Secretary of Defense in Superman trailer

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder about Rick Flag Sr.’s role within the DC Universe, following the release of the latest Superman trailer.

The trailer implies that Frank Grillo’s character, General Flag Sr., might have been promoted to the position of Secretary of Defense, as this is suggested when Lois Lane mentions that he would be overseeing Superman’s actions.

In contrast, the teaser for Peacemaker Season 2 revealed that Flag Senior will be heading ARGUS, a group dedicated to the research and unification of superhumans. This revelation has left fans even more puzzled.

Nonetheless, filmmaker James Gunn has clarified the issue through interactions on Threads. A fan questioned him about Rick Flag Senior’s role, asking, “Is Rick Flag senior the secretary of defense, or was that just how the trailer was edited? I thought he was running ARGUS now?

To this, he responded, “ARGUS’s leader is him, but he works alongside Defense Secretary General Mori.

Grillo mentioned discussing his role as Flag Sr. in DCU alongside Collider next November 2024, likening it to Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury in the MCU. He stated, “There’s a hint of Sam Jackson’s essence. It’s akin to characters who briefly appear and have significant, decisive roles, like Superman’s Jor-El, yet will play a more substantial part in Peacemaker. Additionally, I’ll have a crucial role within the Creature Commandos, eventually becoming their leader.

The actor went on to say, “Indeed, it’s uncertain what lies ahead, but I believe Rick Flag serves as a leader for ARGUS, somewhat similar to Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Samuel L. Jackson. Of course, anything could happen. It’s an ever-evolving storyline.
