Superman Star Explains How His X-Men Role Was a Missed Opportunity

Before taking on the part of Mister Terrific in the upcoming Superman film, actor Edi Gathegi previously played the Marvel character Darwin in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. His character was initially depicted as a mutant with the power to adapt and flourish in any environment.

In the film, Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr enlisted Darwin, a mutant character, into their team. Unfortunately, he didn’t get much screen time as he was killed by Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club. Fans of Darwin were disappointed with his portrayal in the movie because they felt that his powers should have protected him from Shaw’s attack, as depicted in the comics.

What did Edi Gathegi say about X-Men: First Class?

In a heartfelt chat with EW, I confessed my feelings echoing those of many fans regarding Darwin’s shocking demise in X-Men: First Class. I shared that at first, I too hoped the studio might find a way to resurrect my character.

Gathegi stated, “They weren’t necessarily incorrect, but I believe it was a matter of poor portrayal and squandered chance. There was so much potential for the character, things they should have explored with the character. I had hoped to reappear [after First Class] since, as you’re aware, the character doesn’t perish. The fact that he died in the initial film isn’t a major issue if he follows his comic book counterpart’s path, which is resurrection. Every movie where the character didn’t return served to reinforce that it was a misrepresentation and a missed opportunity.

Regarding the upcoming Superman film, Gathegi is optimistic that he won’t encounter the same issues as his superhero character, as he’s aware that DC Studios has specific plans for his character. He likened this opportunity to rectifying mistakes made with Darwin, and added that this isn’t his only project, hinting at future collaborations.

In the movie “Superman,” helmed by Gunn, we find a stellar cast. David Corenswet portrays both Superman and Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce is Perry White, Mikaela Hoover steps into the role of Cat Grant, Beck Bennett becomes Steve Lombard, María Gabriela de Faría is The Engineer, Sara Sampaio plays Eve Teshmacher, Anthony Carrigan assumes Metarmorpho’s character, Frank Grillo portrays Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced stars as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion becomes the Green Lantern, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell play Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively. Additionally, Alan Tudyk, Michael Rooker, and Grace Chan are also part of the ensemble.
