Superman Post-Credit Scenes Explained by James Gunn

Ever since its premiere on Friday, James Gunn’s Superman film has been garnering favorable feedback not just from critics but also from viewers. Yet, there are some dedicated DC fans who have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the post-credit sequences in the initial DC Universe movie.

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, viewers have come to expect that superhero movies would end with a cliffhanger in the style of MCU, hinting at future projects or introducing new characters through the post-credit scenes. But in the latest Superman movie, Gunn opted for a different approach with the post-credits sequences, leaving some fans feeling let down.

What did James Gunn say about the Superman post-credit scenes?

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Gunn discussed why he opted against including post-credit scenes linking Superman to DC Studios’ future ventures. Having learned from his time at Marvel, he chose to steer clear of establishing something that might not deliver on its promise in the long run.

As a gamer diving into the Marvel universe, I’ve noticed a fun pattern: the goofiest post-credit scenes tend to be the most popular among fans. Case in point, the hilarious Howard the Duck scene at the end of Guardians and the charming Stan Lee cameo in Guardians 2.

What I’ve learned is that setting up things in post-credit scenes can be exciting, but it’s crucial to ensure a payoff, especially if it ties into something major like the upcoming Supergirl movie. If there’s a chance for a satisfying resolution at the end of the credits connected to the Supergirl film, I’m all for it! After all, we know that project is in development.

As stated by Gunn, while the post-credits scenes for Superman didn’t leave viewers hanging with a traditional cliffhanger, they were designed to provide fans with an entertaining experience featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Krypto.

He went on to say, “I’m not about creating scenes merely for shock value that won’t be developed later. However, I appreciate rewarding the audience for their patience during the credits by introducing them to the talented team behind the film. Giving them a little something extra, in my opinion, adds enjoyment. That’s what I aimed to do, and that’s why we added ‘Terrific’ at the end.
