To grab attention as daringly as Superman, Warner Bros. Discovery orchestrated a grand publicity event before the July 11 premiere of Superman. The heart of this marketing extravaganza features an impressive 11-foot statue of Superman, suspended dramatically atop The Shard – the UK’s tallest structure and a renowned London landmark.
A Figure in the Sky
The massive Superman statue, situated approximately 1,000 feet above the road, seems to be soaring through the air, with its cape flowing behind and eyes gazing towards the horizon. On a clear day, it can be seen from up to 40 miles away. This isn’t merely an attention-grabbing publicity stunt; it’s an engineering marvel. Built over a span of four months, the statue weighs approximately 260 pounds and is securely fastened using galvanized steel cables.
The statue, modeled from 3D scans of actor David Corenswet, who is featured wearing the cape in an upcoming film, was carefully crafted in partnership with the movie’s creative team. Featuring a fibreglass body cast in eco-friendly resin and reinforced by a steel skeleton welded together, it is both environmentally friendly and structurally strong.
Daniel Fulbrook, Head of Marketing at Real Estate Management (UK), which oversees The Shard, stated, “This isn’t merely a statue; it’s a symbol. Superman has long embodied courage, justice, and optimism. Placing him as a guardian above the city from such great heights breathes life into those values in an entirely unique fashion.
The Stunt Behind the Symbol
The intricate process of setting up the structure was successfully finished before dawn on July 1. This meticulously planned operation, requiring cranes, a team of expert riggers, and close collaboration with city officials, took over 2,000 hours of work from more than 20 talented professionals to bring the sculpture to life and securely hang it above one of London’s most bustling and famous buildings.
In the realm of superhero movies, it’s common to see promotional gimmicks. However, this time around, the lifelike quality and grandeur of the setup led to an uncommon response from spectators. Some people apparently believed they were witnessing a real-life flight, causing a wave of viral videos and TikToks to surface, with titles such as “Is Superman Real?” and “I thought I was dreaming.
Director James Gunn couldn’t help but express his astonishment. He tweeted, ‘“London, gaze upward,”‘ along with pictures of the sculpture gleaming at twilight. ‘“To behold such a lifelike portrayal of our Superman perched atop The Shard is breathtaking,” he added.
London! Look up over The Shard! #Superman is in theaters July 11.

The Face of a New Era
This daring move isn’t merely advertising a film; it’s announcing a new beginning for DC’s cinematic realm. With Corenswet taking on the role of Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult portraying cunning Lex Luthor, Superman is ready to reshape the mythology for a fresh audience. Preliminary feedback from international press conferences and fan gatherings hints at a comeback to the character’s optimistic foundations, a conscious shift away from the grim undertones of recent DC productions.
As a part of the game, I’ve been deeply engrossed in spreading the word about our project. Whether it’s giving fans sneak peeks or sharing some light-hearted moments on TikTok, I’m proud to be a part of this global team. From Tokyo to Toronto and countless places in between, we’ve been touring the world, delivering one consistent message: this Superman isn’t just for a specific group; he’s for everyone. He embodies the essence of humanity, yet towers above all, a hero that resonates with people from every corner of the globe.
Marketing or Mythmaking?
Although many found it impressive, some people expressed discomfort with the placement of the hovering statue. Some social media users described it as “unsettling” or “overly realistic,” while others raised concerns about its potential to blur the boundaries between fantasy and real life, possibly creating safety issues.
Helena Tovey, a PR strategist, explains that this kind of marketing succeeds when it’s attention-grabbing and mysterious. She said, “It’s all about spectacle and vagueness.” The goal is to make people question, ‘Is that genuine?’ When you manage to stir curiosity like that, especially in a world filled with digital content, something tangible and breathtaking catches the eye.
As the movie premiere approaches, the Superman statue remains a popular attraction and continues to generate news coverage. Helicopters hovering over the monument, hinting at the Daily Planet newsroom maybe, only enhances the dramatic effect. Whether you consider it clever advertising or an unusual city sculpture, the picture of Superman hovering silently above London has already become one of the most striking images of this summer.
And as the posters say: this summer, look up. Superman will soar into cinemas worldwide on July 11!
