Superman: Mister Terrific Actor Talks ‘Redemption Arc’ After X-Men Movie Death

Actor Edi Gathegi, who played Superman, is overjoyed to have the opportunity for another chance to portray a superhero on the silver screen again.

Prior to donning the role of Mister Terrific for the upcoming DC Universe hit, Gathegi had previously appeared as the young mutant Darwin in the 2011 prequel X-Men: First Class. Sadly, despite his mutant ability enabling survival in any situation, Darwin’s character was abruptly terminated early in the superhero film, thus limiting Gathegi’s tenure within the X-Men Universe.

12 years after being cast, Gathegi will appear as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific in the upcoming Superman movie, set for release in July. On a recent DC Studios Showcase Podcast, Gathegi was questioned about Mister Terrific being his second chance to portray a superhero following Darwin. However, the actor seemed uninterested in reminiscing, instead stating, “Let’s not dwell on that. It’s too intriguing.

What did Edi Gathegi say about getting the chance to play a different superhero?

Instead, Gathegi seized the moment to discuss his feelings about portraying a renowned Black superhero on the silver screen. “I’m overjoyed that my character has a chance at redemption in the latest DC Universe,” he expressed. “I can’t wait to motivate an entire generation of young African-American children with this new hero,” he added.

In James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, Mister Terrific, portrayed by Gathegi, is among the superheroes set to join David Corenswet’s Man of Steel. Additionally, the movie will introduce Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, with Angela Spica. It’s also anticipated that Milly Alcock will make a guest appearance as Supergirl before her solo movie in 2026.

Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first movie in the DCU.
