James Gunn considers Superman to be his “first superhero movie.”
This weekend, the highly-anticipated Superman movie written and directed by Gunn will debut in the United States, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios. The film features David Corenswet portraying the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor.
Before taking on Superman, Gunn had previously worked on several comic book-themed film and TV projects. These include Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), The Suicide Squad (2021), upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), and the Peacemaker series on TV.
What did James Gunn say about directing Superman?
In conversation with GamesRadar+, Gunn clarified his viewpoint that the mentioned films aren’t classified as superhero movies in the same league as Superman due to their unique storytelling aspects.
He stated, “Guardians were space explorers, not comic book superheroes. Unlike the stereotypical characters, they didn’t have hidden identities or disguises like masks and costumes, nor did they possess extraordinary abilities we might associate with superpowers. Instead, their abilities were simply the talents inherent to their origins.
In essence, what I’m saying is that, in many aspects, this film feels like my first superhero movie since even the Suicide Squad were essentially villains. This aspect presented unique challenges because when crafting a story for characters like Rocket Raccoon or Superman, I always ask myself, “What if these characters were real? How would they behave? Where would they originate?” So, it was all about exploring those questions and delving into their realities.
On July 11, 2025, Superman makes his grand entrance in U.S. theaters and IMAX screens. After that, the DC Universe created by Gunn and Peter Safran carries on with the second season of Peacemaker starting from August 2025.
