In response to fan inquiries on social media site Threads, the director of Superman provided some insightful information about the design of Hawkgirl’s wings in the upcoming film.
On the Thread, a user recently brought up James Gunn and asked, “Are Hawkgirl’s wings in the Superman trailer organic or mechanical, as it’s hard for me to tell?” After a brief pause, the director clarified that the wings, in fact, are “Organic.
The depiction of Hawkgirl’s trait, specifically Kendra Saunders, mirrors the comic book descriptions. Saunders first appeared in comics back in 1999 from JSA: Secret Files and Origins #1. In the comics, her wings are biologically grown and composed of Nth metal. Notably, Hawkman, played by Alis Hodge, has already made an appearance in the DCEU, starring in the 2022 film Black Adam.
In an interview with Collider in April 2024, Isabela Merced expressed her delight when people recognize her as Hawkgirl from Superman, saying, “It’s an honor for me if someone on the street points at me and exclaims, ‘Hawkgirl!’ I don’t need them to know my name. These characters are cherished by so many, and it makes me happy that I might have a small corner in their hearts. Whether it’s due to my performance or something else, as long as it resonates with them, I’m genuinely thrilled about it.
