Superman: How Project Hail Mary’s Writer Changed DCU Movie’s Ending

In a few weeks, the upcoming DCU film titled “Superman” will soar onto theater screens, with Gunn serving both as writer and director. The cast includes David Corenswet portraying the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the role of Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult assuming the part of Lex Luthor.

In conversation with Collider, Gunn shared an instance where Goddard offered him counsel that prevented Superman’s conclusion from being “grim.

According to Gunn, Drew Goddard was incredibly helpful during their work on the movie. There were a few small details they disagreed on, mainly concerning the overall tone – either making it darker or lighter in certain places. While discussing one particular point, Goddard said something like, “This isn’t the film for that gloomy ending.” I realized he was right, and that decision stuck with me during editing.

Alongside the upcoming film adaptation of Project Hail Mary, this individual has also contributed to several notable films like Cloverfield (2008), World War Z (2013), and The Martian (2015). He penned and directed The Cabin in the Woods (2011) and Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) as well. In television, his work extends to series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Lost, Daredevil, The Good Place, and many others.

Superhero classic, Superman, is set to hit U.S. movie theaters and IMAX screens on July 11, 2025. This release is a joint production by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, marking the start of the first chapter of the DCU titled “Gods and Monsters.” Following closely in August will be the second season of the DCU’s Peacemaker project.
