Superman Gets Its Official MPAA Rating & It’s No Surprise

In a little over three weeks, James Gunn’s Superman movie is set to hit theaters, and it has just been given an official MPAA rating. This film, being the initial theatrical adventure in Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, appears to contain numerous action sequences that might be too intense for viewers younger than 13, as suggested by its recently disclosed rating.

Superman rated PG-13 for violence and other themes

As indicated by the Film Rating system, the Motion Picture Association (MPAA) has given a PG-13 classification to the upcoming Superman movie. This rating is attributed to the movie’s content, which includes violence, action sequences, and strong language.

Consequently, the upcoming Superman movie is expected to share the same age-appropriate rating as Gunn’s Marvel movies, with each installment within the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy being assigned the same rating.

Superman’s PG-13 classification aligns with the ratings of the last two films featuring him on the big screen: Man of Steel (with Henry Cavill) and Superman Returns from 2006, where Brandon Routh portrayed Superman.

In the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), movies like Superman starring Cavill were initially given PG-13 ratings. However, some special editions of these films received higher ratings. For instance, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, both originally rated PG-13 in 2016 and 2017 respectively, later versions (Ultimate Edition for the former and the Snyder Cut for the latter) were given R ratings. These extended or uncut versions contained more mature content.

Besides Corenswet, the impressive cast of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film features talents such as Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Skyler Gisondo, and Isabela Merced, along with others. The movie is set to take flight in theaters on July 11, 2025.
