Recently, Peter Safran opened up about the upcoming “Superman” movie and elaborated on the casting decision for “Nicholas Hoult” as “Lex Luthor”. In a recent interview for the DC Nation Spotlight series, Safran clarified why Hoult was the ideal pick for this role and highlighted the unique aspects of this new interpretation of Superman compared to previous versions.
Peter Safran talks ‘extraordinary’ Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor performance in Superman
In a recent DC Nation Spotlight conversation, it was revealed by DC Studios co-head Peter Safran why actor Nicholas Hoult landed the role of Lex Luthor within the upcoming Superman movie, which kicks off James Gunn’s revamped DC universe.
Safran expressed, “Without a doubt, he’s the modern-day Lex Luthor, the one who comes to mind when people think of Lex. Nick is an exceptionally talented actor; he’s been in the profession since he was just five years old. I believe he felt that Lex was the role he was destined for, and he jumped right into it.
In James Gunn’s movie, we don’t get to see Superman’s beginnings as an origin story. Instead, it starts with Clark Kent, who’s been working at the Daily Planet for a while now, having a three-month relationship with Lois Lane. This film plunges us right into the DC Universe, filled with metahumans, superheroes, supervillains, magic, and robots.
In this movie, David Corenswet takes the lead role as both Superman/Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane by his side. Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor for the first time, offering a fresh take on the infamous villain. The ensemble also includes Nathan Fillion (as Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord), María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer), and Terence Rosemore (Otis). Wendell Pierce plays Perry White, while Sara Sampaio takes on the role of Eve Teschmacher.
As I dive into this exciting new world, I find myself transformed into the character of Metamorpho, with Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell by my side as they bring Jonathan and Martha Kent to life. And just when I think things can’t get any better, Milly Alcock graces our screens for the first time as Supergirl, gearing up for her own solo film!
Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025, and marks the official start of the new DCU.
