James Gunn‘s Superman is on its way to box office glory after a strong Thursday night.
What box office records did Superman set?
On its Thursday previews, Superman raked in a staggering $22.5 million, with an additional $2.8 million coming from Tuesday’s Amazon Prime Member screenings. Even when you deduct the Tuesday earnings, Superman has shattered three significant box office preview records. As the first DC Universe blockbuster, it surpassed the $17.5 million of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to set a new high for director James Gunn’s box office previews. Furthermore, Superman outperformed Lilo & Stitch’s $14.5 million from earlier this year, claiming the title for the highest preview earnings of 2025.
In conclusion, Superman has surpassed the $9 million earned by Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013 to claim the highest preview box office earnings for a standalone Superman film at approximately $22.5 million. Yet, it did not manage to beat Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s impressive $27.7 million preview earnings from 2016, so that film continues to hold the record for the best previews featuring the Man of Steel.
Initially, it was projected that Superman would earn approximately $100 million during its opening weekend at the box office. However, after strong Thursday previews, these estimates have increased to between $140 million and $150 million. Furthermore, international markets are anticipated to contribute over $100 million, potentially pushing the global opening weekend earnings of Superman to over $250 million.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that “Superman,” masterfully penned and helmed by Gunn, sees David Corenswet don the cape as Clark Kent/Superman. The challenge here is to win over the world as their protector, facing adversity when Lex Luthor, brilliantly played by Nicholas Hoult, devises a strategy to turn public sentiment against him. Rachel Brosnahan brings Lois Lane to life alongside her, while Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced join the cast as Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, respectively, adding depth to this superhero ensemble.
Superman is now playing in theaters, as the first film in the DCU‘s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters.
