A recent study shows that James Gunn’s Superman is significantly increasing the viewership of Man of Steel, along with numerous other DC titles on Max. After the movie’s initial release, there has been a notable surge in audience interaction for various Superman productions and DC series, suggesting a resurgence in enthusiasm for the expansive DC Universe.
James Gunn’s Superman leads to increased viewership for Man of Steel
Last week, it was revealed that Man of Steel was the most viewed Superman movie on HBO Max, experiencing a significant surge in viewership by 218%. According to Deadline, this was followed closely by Christopher Reeve’s first appearance as Superman in 1978, which saw a staggering week-over-week increase of 332%. Interestingly, the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story recorded an impressive spike in viewership by a factor of 1,206%.
The DC series have seen an improvement too. Viewership for Peacemaker Season 1 surged by 91%, reflecting excitement for Season 2, slated for August 2025 release. This heightened audience interaction mirrors the worldwide box office success of Superman, which grossed $220 million as of this past Monday.
According to reports, James Gunn’s portrayal of the character has a more playful feel. In an interview with Deadline, he mentioned that the movie revisits the brightness and delight associated with Superman’s beginnings. Following their takeover of DC Studios in 2022, Gunn started directing Superman, which marks the commencement of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ era for the new DC Universe.
In this production, David Corenswet takes the lead as Superman. The talented group of actors also includes Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría playing The Engineer. Additional cast members include Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion.
As a passionate gamer (and DC fan), I’ve noticed a significant surge in my interest towards DC content on HBO Max ever since Superman graced the silver screen. Although HBO Max hasn’t disclosed the exact viewer numbers, the consistent week-over-week growth indicates a powerful streaming reaction following the movie’s premiere.
Currently, James Gunn’s version of Superman is being shown in cinemas, whereas Man of Steel can be streamed on HBO Max.
