As a child of the ’90s who grew up watching reruns of Super Friends, I can confidently say that the new Super Friends: The Complete Series Blu-ray has been a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Although I never knew there were so many iterations of this classic show, it’s been a delight to witness its evolution from its humble beginnings with Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog to the addition of the Wonder Twins and Gleek.
As a kid, my initial encounter with superheroes was primarily through cartoons. Consequently, I’ve always held a sentimental attachment towards Super Friends, even though the series ceased production before my birth. However, I frequently watched reruns of it during my childhood. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of revisiting this show with the release of the new Super Friends: The Complete Series Blu-ray. This series consisted of seven variations and aired over a span of 12 years.
In this animated television show called ‘Super Friends’, produced by Hanna-Barbera and broadcast on ABC between 1973 and 1985, some of DC’s most powerful superheroes team up to maintain justice. They are aided by young apprentices, all part of the Justice League of America as depicted in this series.

What’s most exciting about the Super Friends: The Complete Series Blu-ray collection is that it encompasses every single episode of the cartoon ever produced. I must admit, I wasn’t aware that the series had undergone various transformations throughout its run. Watching this evolution unfold across 93 episodes is quite entertaining, as the initial team included three relatively forgotten sidekicks – Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog – who were eventually replaced by the Wonder Twins and Gleek. Although the show didn’t have a reputation for exceptional storytelling, it offers a wealth of vibrant and upbeat action that makes for enjoyable background viewing, thanks to its high-definition transfer.
For the first time, I didn’t witness the entire series from start to finish. Yet, it’s exciting to watch as more Justice League of America members, such as Cyborg and Firestorm, make their entries later on. The series also features a variety of guest stars, which is another delight. Although the Legion of Doom serves as the primary adversaries, various other villains like The Joker, Darkseid, and Mr. Mxyzptik also make appearances. This collection showcases the rich diversity that has always been a part of the DC universe. The Super Friends: The Complete Series Blu-ray is an excellent tool for recalling what initially drew us to these fascinating characters.
Even though there aren’t any extra perks, Warner Bros. has ensured that this collection is packed with everything it should be. For instance, it contains the eight “missing” episodes from the 1980 SuperFriends series, which were only broadcast overseas. In essence, you’re receiving all of the following: Super Friends (1973), The All-New Super Friends Hour, Challenge of the Superfriends, The World’s Greatest SuperFriends, the entire three seasons of SuperFriends, Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show, and The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. In total, it amounts to a substantial amount of content (approximately 3,142 minutes) that might be unfamiliar if you’re not an ardent fan.
16 discs make up this Blu-ray collection, much like the Succession: The Complete Series set. These discs are housed within an Epik Pak tray, which nestles snugly inside the case. Unlike some other sets, this one occupies the entire width of the interior, preventing the discs from moving about when handled. The packaging itself is empty, but each disc bears the unique logo of the show, helping viewers identify which episodes are on each disc. It may not be top-tier luxury packaging, but it’s a step up from what you might find in similar collections.
