Sundar C reflects on not being considered a good director despite continued blockbusters; ‘I am glad that people are…’

This year, Director Sundar C made a comeback to the silver screen following the long-awaited premiere of Madha Gaja Raja, which was first announced 12 years ago. The movie’s strong performance at the box office led the director to ponder why he isn’t typically recognized among the elite directors, despite his consistent success.

At the success gathering, I, Sundar C, shared that while my films have garnered recognition and consistently proven profitable, there’s a lingering thought in my mind. Namely, I often feel under-appreciated as a director and believe I haven’t received the recognition for my work that I truly deserve.

He went on to say, “Despite the numerous successful films I’ve produced, I’m not often included among the top directors. To me, filmmaking is a collaborative endeavor where many individuals invest their savings and effort. My viewers also dedicate a significant portion of their time to my movies. I strive to ensure that my audience is content. It brings me joy that people appreciate my work, and I regard them as my deities.

In spite of being categorized as a director in commercial cinema, Sundar C expressed his acceptance of this label during the event. Music composer Vijay Antony, who was present, took the opportunity to commend the director, noting that films like Madha Gaja Raja had been beneficial for cinemas during Pongal 2025. Moreover, he emphasized that Aranmanai 4, released in 2024, played a crucial role in rejuvenating the theater business.

Furthermore, Vijay Antony noted that Sundar C’s enduring legacy is rooted in the extraordinary craftsmanship of films like Anbe Sivam.

Speaking about the movie titled “Madha Gaja Raja,” this film, orchestrated by Sundar C, highlights Vishal as the main character. The movie is a blend of action and comedy, and it revolves around the reunion of childhood friends for a wedding. Unforeseen challenges arise during this joyous occasion, forcing them to deal with an unanticipated crisis. As they tackle the obstacles ahead, they also grapple with their personal issues simultaneously.

The film features Santhanam, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Anjali, and other prominent actors in significant parts. Despite a 12-year gap in its release, the movie has been successful at the box office, earning reasonable profits, albeit with mixed reviews from critics.
