Suits LA Creator Explains Why It Reduces F-Bombs & Curse Words

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Suits franchise, I must admit that my initial excitement for Suits LA was somewhat tempered by the news of its more family-friendly content. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the need to adapt to different networks and audience demographics, but I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the colorful language and edge that made the original show so appealing.

Suits LA is a spinoff from the hit legal drama series Suits, which ran for eight seasons on USA Network from 2011 to 2019. Unlike its predecessor, this spinoff unfolds in Los Angeles and focuses on Stephen Amell’s character, Ted Black, a former prosecutor turned successful entertainment lawyer. The original show was known for its frequent use of profanities and strong language, but Suits LA is designed to be more family-friendly. In a recent interview, Aaron Korsh, creator of both shows, discussed the reasons behind this change.

Aaron Korsh says Suits LA will average ‘three ‘god—-its’ per episode’

In a recent chat, Aaron Korsh shared that the new Suits LA series will have significantly less foul language and profanity compared to the original show. This decision comes from NBC’s policies since the spin-off will be airing on their network. To give you an idea, Suits usually has around five curse words per episode, but in contrast, Suits LA will only allow three instances of “darn” or similar expressions per show.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Korsh explained that due to the change from basic cable to a broadcast network, adjustments were necessary. This means they can’t use profanity like “s–t” or “f–k”. Instead, you might hear some “darnits”, but not as much as you did on Suits.

In a playful manner, Amell jokingly mentioned to the same news outlet that he kept all the profanities for himself. He further explained, “During filming on a Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we had takes without any swear words, and I spontaneously inserted a ‘darn it.’

Korsh pointed out that unlike USA Network, which requires a cable subscription for access, NBC is a broadcast channel that can theoretically be received by anyone with a TV and an antenna, making it more widely accessible. Shows on NBC and other broadcast channels, therefore, have stricter regulations compared to those on cable networks like USA Network.

Additionally, Suits LA’s broadcast time is set for 9:00 PM ET/PT, which means that many children are still up at this hour. Consequently, the show’s creators must exercise great caution in their programming choices.

The show is scheduled to premiere on NBC on February 23, 2025.
