Brian Baumgartner and Patton Oswalt’s cameos in Suits LA, explained

In the most recent episode of Suits LA, titled “He Knew,” Brian Baumgartner makes an appearance in a self-portrayal role. Here, he is depicted as Ted Black’s client, and characters Erica and Leah are tasked with resolving his issues. Upon encountering Erica, Baumgartner expresses his wish to move past his popular character from The Office, Kevin Malone. He acknowledges that while he is grateful for the role, it has limited his opportunities by typecasting him.

As a devotee, I shared with Baumgartner his aspiration to move from comical performances towards more profound, Academy Award-caliber roles. However, Erica cautioned me, pointing out that no such transformation has ever occurred in the annals of Tinseltown.

Later on, Baumgartner highlights that celebrities such as Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx, and Robin Williams (may he rest in peace) followed this approach. Initially, Erica acknowledges they are exceptions, but then reveals that Hanks is actually a client of Black’s law firm, leading Baumgartner to suggest arranging a meeting with the Forrest Gump actor.

Initially, Baumgartner and Patton Oswalt didn’t have a set-up. Regrettably, they engaged in a heated dispute, during which Oswalt criticized The Office. This made Baumgartner so upset that he stormed out of the office and confronted Erica, warning her that if she didn’t meet his demands next time, she would lose her job. It was later discovered that Erica had provoked Oswalt to instigate the argument with Baumgartner. This was orchestrated so that the actor from The Office could seize the opportunity to showcase himself for more dramatic roles.

Erica’s scheme was successful, as Baumgartner managed to get a lead role for an off-Broadway play.
