As a dedicated follower and admirer of Sudha Kongara Prasad’s work, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for her as she navigates through the challenges that come with being a filmmaker in Tamil cinema. Her dedication to storytelling is evident in her exceptional body of work and it’s heartening to see her speak candidly about the financial constraints that she, like many others, face.

Among the highly esteemed filmmakers and screenwriters in South cinema, Sudha Kongara Prasad stands out as one of the leading figures. Over nearly several decades, she has demonstrated remarkable skill and creativity, earning recognition for her exceptional work. Notable films under her direction include Drohi, Guru, Soorarai Pottru, among many others.

During a recent conversation, the director of Sarfira shared insights into the financial challenges that movie creators often encounter in Tamil filmmaking.

Sudha Kongara claims tight budget is a big problem in Tamil films

During an interview with News18 Showsha, director Sudha Kongara discussed some of the difficulties she’s encountered while working in Tamil cinema, specifically highlighting that working within a tight budget is one of her greatest challenges.

Sudha emphasized and clarified, “The budget is often a challenge. If the finances don’t add up, it’s not worth producing the movie. Financial limitations keep coming back as an issue.”

Sudha addresses the shift of films from theaters to OTT platforms

After the COVID-19 pandemic, as she continued to think about things, Sudha shared her insights. She explained that Indian cinema underwent a significant transformation during this period. The filmmaker pointed out that a substantial amount of content previously intended for theater screenings was instead released on online streaming platforms (OTT).

In the course of events as they’ve unfolded and normality resumed, I’ve noticed that the income derived from Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms has been on a downward trend. This insight shared by Sudha has sparked a renewed interest among filmmakers to revert back to traditional theatrical releases for their projects.

Sudha Kongara manifests Tamil film industry to be adept with the post of ADs

In a different part of the same interview, Sudha Kongara expressed her hope that Tamil film production might adopt the practice of having assistant directors (ADs) present on set.

As a devoted follower, I’ve shared my experience where, in numerous projects, I’ve found myself single-handedly shouldering both the duties and responsibilities. This multi-tasking scenario has been quite demanding, to say the least. In essence, I’m essentially performing two roles simultaneously – directing and that of a First Assistant Director. As a result, I’ve been under constant stress, which often translates into a short temper. To put it simply, without a First Assistant Director by my side, I’m juggling two jobs at once.

Sudha Kongara apologized for confusing Jyotiba Phule’s educational reforms with Veer Savarkar

Recently, filmmaker Sudha Kongara apologized on social media (now X), following an interview where she inadvertently confused Jyotiba Phule with Veer Savarkar. In the interview, she stated that it was Veer Savarkar who encouraged his wife to study and receive education at a time when this was not common for women. However, in reality, it was actually Jyotiba Phule who championed women’s education.

Yet, following historical accounts, it was Jyotirao Phule who performed this action towards his wife, Savitribai Phule. Consequently, the filmmaker felt compelled to issue an apology for his inaccurate statement to social media users.
