Once again, Unknown Worlds has us on the edge of our seats with a new addition to the Subnautica franchise. The much-anticipated Subnautica 2 is slated for release in Early Access 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X/S, and will be accessible day one through Xbox Game Pass.
Setting & Story
For the first time in any game I’ve played so far, I’ll be departing from our familiar stomping grounds on planet 4546B to delve into an entirely alien underwater realm. This place is brimming with unique ecosystems, peculiar creatures, and hidden perils that are just itching to reveal themselves. In this adventure, I’ll assume the role of a solitary explorer aboard an AI-navigated vessel on a clandestine mission – the specifics of which remain shrouded in mystery. However, one thing is clear: this world isn’t going to be easy to survive, and it may demand more than just quick wit – perhaps even a reevaluation of my own essence.
Dive In Together
At long last, the much anticipated event for Subnautica fans: Now, Subnautica 2 offers co-op play! Up to four adventurers can journey together, construct shared bases, and either confront or circumvent colossal sea monsters. It’s worth noting that multiplayer is entirely optional; if you’d rather embark on the adventure alone, you certainly can. Moreover, an exciting feature includes crossplay compatibility between PC and Xbox versions!
New Gameplay Features
Alongside traditional aspects such as resource collection, base construction, and encounters with startling, fright-inducing creatures, Subnautica 2 presents a novel gameplay feature: genetic modification. This allows you to alter your character’s physiology to enhance survival in the harsh environment. Perhaps gills for swimming deeper, thicker skin for resistance, or night vision for safer navigation – while not yet officially confirmed, it promises to be both intriguing and thrilling.
A Visual Leap Forward (?)
The game is in development with Unreal Engine 5, offering potential for even more visually stunning underwater landscapes, enhanced performance (hopefully), and impressive lighting and particle effects. Base-building is undergoing a significant upgrade: becoming more modular, customizable, and practical. Additionally, vehicles and tools are planned to receive new versions. While this may sound enticing, it might also present challenges for players’ hardware.
🚨 Attention: Oxygen Levels Are Low 🚨
Exciting news for all Subnautica fans! The first sneak peek of Subnautica 2 is here. Don’t miss out and add the game to your wishlist on Steam, Epic, or Xbox. #Subnautica #Subnautica2

When Does It Launch?
In 2025, Subnautica 2 will start its Early Access period, initially available on PC platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, as well as Xbox Series X/S. On the day of release, it will also be accessible via Xbox Game Pass. This Early Access phase is anticipated to last around two to three years, with Unknown Worlds intending to collaborate closely with the community throughout this period. Although a PlayStation version hasn’t been officially announced yet, it seems highly probable.
