In the live-action Street Fighter film, they’ve just announced that an actress will portray the legendary character, Chun-Li.
As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Kitao Sakurai from Bad Trip has been brought on board as the director for the upcoming Street Fighter movie. Originally, Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) were attached to the project, but they had to step down. This cinematic venture is based on Capcom’s iconic media franchise, renowned worldwide for its timeless and popular video games. The game revolves around a diverse group of combatants, including the legendary Chun-Li, who engage in an epic one-on-one global fighting tournament. I can hardly wait to see how this story unfolds on the big screen!
Who is playing Chun-Li in the new Street Fighter movie?
Callina Liang has been chosen to portray Chun-Li, a proficient martial artist and Interpol officer who debuted in 1991’s Street Fighter II. Liang, recognized for her roles in Tell Me Everything, Bad Genius, and Presence, is set to join Andrew Koji (Snake Eyes, Warrior) as Ryu, Noah Centineo (The Recruit, Warfare) as Ken, Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Fast X), the former WWE champion Roman Reigns (Hobbs & Shaw), and Orville Peck in this production.
1987 saw the debut of Capcom’s groundbreaking Street Fighter fighting game series, with the upcoming 2023’s Street Fighter 6 being its most recent addition. The franchise has enjoyed enduring popularity for more than three decades, extending far beyond the realm of video games. In addition to animated adaptations and comic books, it has also seen numerous live-action versions. These include Street Fighter (1994), Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist (2014), and Street Fighter: Resurrection (2016).
Actresses who have played the legendary video game character Chun-Li in previous roles include Ming-Na Wen (known for “The Book of Boba Fett”), Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville”), and Gemma Nguyen.
