Street Fighter & Beneath the Storm Release Dates Delayed by Sony

Due to some recent changes in scheduling, Sony has shared new details about its upcoming lineup of films. The Street Fighter adaptation from Legendary and the shark-themed thriller Beneath the Storm by Tommy Wirkola are among the movies that have been impacted. As Sony rearranges its schedule, various projects are being renamed, moved, or even dropped to fit better with their broader distribution plans and the overall arrangement of their slate.

Sony removes Legendary’s Street Fighter from 2026 release calendar

Initially scheduled for release on March 20, 2026, Sony has taken off the live-action adaptation of Street Fighter from its schedule, as planned by Legendary.

Back in 1987, the renowned video game developer Capcom from Japan (known for launching Street Fighter) and another legendary entity are jointly working on this project – developing and producing it together. In February of 2025, Sony announced Kitao Sakurai, an Emmy nominee, as the director for the film.

Information about the cast, storyline, and scriptwriter for the upcoming Street Fighter project by Sony Pictures has yet to be disclosed. In 2023, Legendary obtained rights for both television and film adaptations of the Street Fighter franchise. However, the studio hasn’t provided any updates on the project’s current status since it was taken off the release schedule.

1994 saw the release of a live-action Street Fighter movie, spearheaded by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia. In contrast, 2009 brought about Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li from 20th Century Fox, with Kristin Kreuk in the lead role.

Beneath the Storm gets new title and moves to July 2026

Sony has renamed Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller “Beneath the Storm” to “Shiver,” and has shifted its release from August 1, 2025, to July 3, 2026. The studio decided on this new release date in order to strategically place the movie among their summer blockbuster releases.

Actors Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou are set to feature in an upcoming film, although specifics about the plot have yet to be disclosed by Sony. However, it’s known that the story revolves around sharks. The movie is written and directed by Wirkola, with Adam McKay and Kevin Messick serving as producers.

2022’s Violent Night, 2013’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, 2017’s What Happened to Monday, and 2024’s Spermageddon were all directed by Wirkola. Sony Pictures will be responsible for distributing Shiver in theaters.
