Street Fighter 6’s Switch 2 debut is shockingly good; just get a better controller

Upon starting Street Fighter 6 on the Switch 2, I had preconceived notions due to my long-standing passion for fighting games and past experiences of subpar ports of good games on the original Nintendo Switch. Yet, I was taken aback when, during the initial phase of the Switch 2’s release, Street Fighter 6 turned out to be a port that included all characters up to Elena, delivered performance equivalent to PC or PS5 versions, shared the same online netcode, and supported crossplay with other editions. No longer will we have to endure poor, incomplete ports lacking key features. This is the genuine article, even if the Joy-Con still requires some improvement regarding input sensitivity.

Putting it through The Lab

Previously, I streamed Street Fighter 6 and Soulcalibur 2 live on Shacknews Twitch last week. My objective was to practice with my chosen characters, master combo sequences, and eventually perform at the same level I usually do across all platforms. Since I had taken a break from Street Fighter 6 for several months to explore other fighters, I was a bit out of shape, but after a short warm-up, I managed to get Terry Bogard and Marisa up to their Expert combo challenges. Later, I utilized my practice on a successful Arcade run on the highest difficulty with Marisa. To conclude, I participated in an online ranked match against Platinum players, winning three out of every three games.

The gameplay in this setup is perfect and consistent, mirroring Street Fighter 6 on other devices like Nintendo Switch 2. There were no noticeable frame rate issues or glitches, and it looks as good as its counterparts on other platforms. Essentially, it’s the same Street Fighter 6 I’ve encountered before, without any compromises in quality. Moreover, all content, including Elena, is present, ensuring this version isn’t lagging behind the others.

I found it astonishingly simple to acclimate myself to the latest edition of the game on the Switch 2. This isn’t just a testament to Capcom’s commitment to ensure this game is accessible across all platforms, but also underscores the Nintendo Switch 2’s prowess in managing such games. Moreover, with its integrated Ethernet port, my multiplayer connections during gameplay were consistently smooth and lag-free.

In summary, while the Joy-Con controllers work fine, they might not be ideal for six-button fighters due to some inconvenient button placements and control issues. The d-pad can be tricky for quarter-circle inputs, and the right stick is too close to the buttons, causing unintended activation of the B button during use. A more suitable controller may be necessary for a comfortable gaming experience.

As a gamer, I can play using the Joy-Con, but let me tell you about an experience I had during one of my online Ranked Matches. The match ended with a Level 3 combo finish that earned me a Perfect, and believe me, there’s something oddly satisfying about that when it comes from a Switch 2 player. However, I can’t help but feel that a gamepad like the Pro Controller or even a stick would offer a more rewarding gaming experience for me and fellow players. I have high hopes that for future releases on the Switch 2, especially fighting games, we will have more controller options to choose from. Despite its functionality, the Joy-Con can be a bit of a challenge in these types of games.

One more platform for the Golden Era

In this amazing age, we’re fortunate to have an abundance of active fighting games such as Street Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, and Fatal Fury. There are many other excellent fighters out there too, with more coming from universes like Marvel and Invincible. Street Fighter 6 serves as a testament to the potential of the rumored Switch 2 console. If, like me, you’ve been hesitant about Nintendo in the fighting game genre due to its past lower-quality offerings, it’s high time for a rethink. However, be prepared to adapt to a challenging standard pad; unless you invest in either the Pro Controller or an alternative option.

The opinions expressed here stem from a digital version of the game, Street Fighter 6 Year 1-2 Fighters Edition, which was provided by the publisher for the Nintendo Switch 2. This game can also be found on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
