Stranger Things Animated Show Gets First Details, Timeline Revealed

The first details about Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 have been revealed.

As Stranger Things enthusiasts eagerly count down to the last season of their beloved Netflix series, it’s interesting to note that an animated spin-off named “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” is also under production. Matt and Ross Duffer are taking on executive producer roles for this project, with Eric Robles stepping into the role of showrunner.

What do we know about Stranger Things: Tales From ’85?

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s announcement at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the forthcoming series is slated for a 1985 winter setting, which places the narrative timeline somewhere between the events of Stranger Things Seasons 2 and 3.

In the year 1985, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 presents the original cast of characters, including a fresh addition, Nikki – a tough-as-nails, mohawk-sporting girl. They engage in battles against brand-new monsters and work diligently to solve the supernatural enigma that has been haunting their town.

At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Robles shared with the audience that the series’ atmosphere is reminiscent of ’80s animated shows such as Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, Dungeons & Dragons, and The Real Ghostbusters. These programs occasionally featured episodes that were both quite ominous and genuinely spooky.

The article continues by mentioning that the finished design was quite different from the initial concepts, taking inspiration instead from the CGI styles seen in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Arcane”, the eerie vibe of classic “Goosebumps” book covers, and character designs by Meybis Ruiz Cruz (Entergalactic). The new monsters, including pumpkins, zombies, and a fearsome snow shark with teeth, were created by creature designer Carlos Huante.

As a gamer, I’m part of an incredible team that includes the Duffer Brothers, along with Robles, Hilary Leavitt, Shawn Levy, and Dan Cohen, who serve as executive producers. Meanwhile, our animations are brought to life by the talented folks at Flying Bark, based in Australia.

Tales From ’85 hasn’t been given a specific release date yet, but it will be on Netflix in 2026. The last season of Stranger Things starts this coming November.
