Strange Darling Director Reveals Serial Killer Movie Was Almost Canceled

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersing myself in diverse narratives, I can’t help but feel a strange kinship with JT Mollner, the resilient director of Strange Darling. Much like navigating through the treacherous levels of my favorite games, Mollner’s journey to bring this film to life was fraught with challenges and unexpected obstacles.

JT Mollner, the creative mind behind the movie “Strange Darling”, has shared an interesting tidbit – the production almost didn’t see the light of day shortly after it started. This surprising news emerges as the film prepares for its US theater debut on August 23rd. Initially, “Strange Darling” made its global debut at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on September 22, 2023.

JT Mollner says Strange Darling was nearly canceled during production

In a recent chat, Mollner disclosed that Strange Darling’s production nearly halted for several reasons during its filming in Portland, Oregon, back in 2022. Notably, Giovanni Ribisi, recognized for his work in films like Saving Private Ryan and the TV series Sneaky Pete, was behind the camera as the director of photography, capturing the entire movie on traditional 35mm film.

At the premiere of Strange Darling on the red carpet, Mollner opened up to The Direct about the hurdles he faced during the film’s production. “The production had to halt for nearly five days at the start due to several reasons,” he explained, “and it was truly terrifying. We encountered numerous obstacles in the beginning and had to momentarily stop because of external pressures. At one point, we even feared that we wouldn’t be able to resume filming.” This signified a significant hurdle for us.

Mollner stated that he now views the incident as a valuable learning opportunity. “It was a significant learning experience,” he continued, “maintaining a positive mindset, keeping everyone engaged, returning to work, and pushing even harder.” Essentially, it was a challenging production for multiple reasons. The team and actors were exceptional, and everyone we worked with was outstanding. However, there were external factors that were difficult to manage, and we gained many insights from this experience. Ultimately, we emerged stronger as a result.

Notably, Ribisi is not only the director of photography for the film but also plays a supporting character. The storyline primarily revolves around two characters, whose strange one-night encounter takes a lethal twist.
