STR on grabbing Kamal Haasan’s neck in Thug Life: ‘Was confused whether it hurt him’

The upcoming film “Thug Life,” starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, is set to premiere on June 5, 2025. With the release date quickly approaching, Simbu recently attended the audio launch where he discussed a specific scene involving him gripping Kamal Haasan’s neck.

In the depicted moment, reminiscent of the trailer, STR was spotted restraining the senior actor with a firm grip resembling a chokehold. Later, STR disclosed that it was actually director Mani Ratnam who instructed him to apply the hold with considerable force.

The director instructed him to execute the action firmly because it was evident on camera and should appear genuine. During their discussion, the actor shared, “When I squeezed his neck forcefully, Kamal sir reacted dramatically. I wasn’t sure if it caused him pain or if he was acting. I didn’t know whether to adjust my performance, fearing that Mani sir would call cut, or continue and potentially hurt him. But when I eased up on the grip later, the scene looked great.

Wrapping up, Simbu admitted his mistake for surprising Kamal Haasan and humorously pointed out that it was actually director Mani Ratnam who should take the blame.

At the audio launch, I found myself beaming with pride as Simbu openly gushed about his deep-seated respect for Mani Ratnam. In a sea of opportunities drying up for many actors and filmmakers, it was Mani who extended the role of “Thug Life” to me, a gesture I will never forget.

In the realm of cinema, the movie “Thug Life” is an upcoming action-packed gangster story centered around Rangaraya Sakthivel Naicker. This character is a gangster who takes in a young boy named Amaran, explaining that their fates are linked.

In Sakthivel’s eyes, Amaran becomes his potential heir, brought up under his care. Yet, it is assumed that Sakthivel has perished in an instant, and there are whispers suggesting that Amaran, his fostered child, might have been involved in the conspiracy.

Upon his return, Sakthivel is determined to exact revenge, crafting the remainder of the film into a deadly game. The main characters are played by Simbu (STR) and Kamal Haasan, with Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, among others, taking on significant roles.
