Stone Island and New Balance are teaming up again to introduce a new version of the Made in USA 998 shoe, as this is the first time they’ve applied their unique design approach to this classic model.

Originally introduced in 1993, the New Balance 998 was the first sneaker to feature ABZORB cushioning, a hallmark of the brand’s commitment to comfort and performance. This latest iteration draws inspiration from Stone Island’s iconic Raso Gommato fabric, a military-origin satin weave cotton with a polyurethane coating. First introduced by Massimo Osti in 1984, the material has been a defining element of Stone Island’s aesthetic, continually evolving through experimental dyeing and lamination techniques.

For this release, the Raso Gommato-inspired polyurethane-coated cotton canvas forms the shoe’s upper, complemented by nubuck overlays and reflective details, including the signature New Balance “N” logo, heel tab and upper accents. The sneaker debuts in an exclusive mauve, deep plum, and copper maroon colorway, mirroring the palette of Stone Island’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2025 collection. Underfoot, the ABZORB midsole ensures comfort, while a translucent outsole reveals the text “stone island product research” alongside debossed “new balance 998” branding at the heel. A woven Stone Island Compass logo patch sits prominently on the nylon tongue.

The Stone Island x New Balance 998 will be available starting March 27 in select Stone Island stores and online. Access is limited to those with a MyStoneIsland account, with sign-ups opening March 10 via the brand’s website and WeChat store. Details on price have yet to be shared at the time of writing.
