Steven Spielberg, James Gunn, & More Pay Tribute to David Lynch

Various noteworthy figures from Hollywood, including Steven Spielberg, James Gunn, and Patton Oswalt, are expressing their respects for David Lynch.

On Thursday, the 16th of January, 2025, it was revealed that Lynch, the iconic filmmaker, had tragically passed away at the age of 78. He was famously recognized for co-creating the hit TV series Twin Peaks with Mark Frost, and for directing numerous acclaimed films such as Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986), Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), among others.

With great sadness, we, his family, are sharing the news of David Lynch’s passing, both the individual and the artist. At this moment, we kindly ask for some privacy. The world seems less vibrant without him here, but he would want us to remember the beauty in life – ‘focus on the donut, not the hole.’ Today is a wonderful day, filled with golden sunlight and blue skies.

What did Steven Spielberg say about David Lynch?

Speaking on the passing of David Lynch, Spielberg expressed in a statement, “David’s films were extraordinary, with Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and The Elephant Man being particularly defining works that showcased his unique vision as a filmmaker. His movies seemed like they were crafted by hand, making him a singular, dreamlike storyteller. I had the privilege of getting to know David when he portrayed John Ford in The Fabelmans. It was surreal to see one of my idols acting alongside another—David Lynch playing John Ford. It felt like a scene from one of David’s own films. The world will deeply miss such an original and unique creative spirit. His films have already proven timeless, and they always will.

James Gunn expressed his condolences saying, “Farewell David Lynch, you’ve inspired countless people,” while Oswalt wrote on X, “David Lynch, rest in peace. A horse wearing a fez told me so, supposedly, in a dream… or perhaps I misinterpreted the Swedish backwards message.

In simpler terms, Nicolas Cage expressed to Deadline that David Lynch was “courageous, incredibly intelligent, and a trailblazer with a delightful sense of humor.” Working with him, he added, was the most enjoyable experience on a film set, and Lynch will forever be a treasure.

Additionally, numerous individuals like Ron Howard, Kumail Nanjiani, Melanie Lynskey, and many others have paid their respects to Lynch after his demise.

David Lynch emphasized that filmmaking ought to be an enjoyable and delightful experience, even though it may involve challenging labor and confront harsh realities. The actual creative process, however, should radiate with joy. This thought often resonates with me. Farewell, David Lynch. You live on in the impact you’ve made.

It’s truly disheartening to hear about David Lynch. A legend among legends. At 14, I would regularly rent his movies from our neighborhood video store. To this day, I can still recall the exhilarating, electrifying sensation of being creatively inspired to my core and feeling like the world was full of possibilities because of these films.

ComingSoon extends its condolences to Lynch’s family and friends at this time.
