Stephen King Believes the Oscars Should Be Canceled Amid the California Wildfires

Recently, a string of wildfires ravaged Los Angeles, leaving hundreds of homes in ruins and claiming at least 25 lives. These disasters have undeniably affected the awards season, leading to postponements for the WGA, PGA, and the 97th Academy Awards nominations. Despite the Oscars being scheduled for March this year, renowned author Stephen King has expressed a desire for the event to be canceled due to the ongoing wildfires.

Stephen King’s movie adaptations have a rich history with The Academy, having earned nominations for films such as Carrie, The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, and The Green Mile. Moreover, Kathy Bates won her first Oscar for her role in King’s Misery. However, due to the California wildfires this year, an Academy member has expressed their stance on the Oscars through a post on Bluesky.

I’m skipping the Oscars this year, and frankly, I think they ought to be called off. It doesn’t sit right with me to celebrate Hollywood when LA is on fire.

A significant number of Bluesky users expressed disagreement towards Stephen King’s stance on canceling the Academy Awards. One social media user argued that given the numerous interruptions in Hollywood, there may not be a need for the Oscars to continue.

As a passionate supporter, I find myself deeply moved by the plight of these hardworking individuals who have gone without payment for months, even years, due to the pandemic and subsequent union negotiations. Now, they’re battling the devastating effects of fires. It’s crucial that we acknowledge their struggles and stand in solidarity with them by supporting the industry during this challenging time.

The hard work of actors, directors, and other film crew members behind their movies deserves recognition, as many have pointed out. Additionally, numerous individuals who make a living within The Academy and related industries were also highlighted.

Many propose that The Academy promotes understanding about the wildfires in Los Angeles and backs up relief initiatives. Additionally, it’s reported by Fortune that The Oscars contributed approximately $170 million to strengthening Los Angeles’ economy.

Who else believes The Oscars should be canceled this year?

It’s not just Stephen King who feels that way; this year’s Golden Globe winner, Jean Smart, has expressed a similar sentiment on her Instagram. She’s advocating for Hollywood to postpone The Oscars and instead make charitable donations to those affected by wildfires and firefighters.

Respectfully speaking, as we approach the gala time in Hollywood, I fervently urge the broadcasting channels airing the upcoming awards to think deeply about not airing these events. Instead, they could generously donate their potential earnings to aid the victims of the fires and our brave firefighters.

Jean Smart received a similar backlash to Stephen King for urging the awards show to be scrapped.

On March 2nd, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony is set to be broadcast, while the list of nominees will be revealed on January 23rd.
