Stephen Colbert didn’t mince words following President Donald Trump’s comments on the cancellation of The Late Show. This recent disagreement arose after CBS announced that the show is concluding its run by May 2026, citing financial difficulties, but Colbert and numerous other supporters have expressed differing opinions. Here’s what transpired:

Stephen Colbert didn’t sugarcoat his reaction when President Donald Trump commented on The Late Show getting canceled. This new argument started after CBS announced that the show will end in May 2026 due to financial troubles, but many people, including Colbert himself, have expressed different views. Here’s what went down:

Stephen Colbert responds to Donald Trump’s social media post

In the wake of CBS announcing The Late Show’s finale next year, I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction, almost as if it were my own achievement, upon reading Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social, “I couldn’t be happier that Colbert’s gone. His abilities were barely above his ratings.” To this, Stephen Colbert, in a straightforward and bold manner, retorted, “Take a hike, you jerk!

During Monday night’s opening monologue, a comment (initially censored for broadcast) was made. Colbert delved deep into the controversy with an amusingly serious segment titled “Eloquence Cam.” With a feigned New York accent, he gazed directly into the camera and delivered the viral insult, which sparked thunderous applause and chants from the audience in the studio.

Colbert playfully countered Trump’s remark about Jimmy Kimmel possibly losing his show by saying, “Absolutely not, no way.” He humorously suggested that he is the sole “sacrificed one” among late-night hosts. “There’s only space for one on this cross,” he joked, “and the view from up here is incredible.

During The Late Show, Colbert continued to use his characteristic humorous style, but he couldn’t conceal his annoyance about its termination. CBS stated financial difficulties as the cause, yet the host was skeptical. He queried, “Could it merely be a financial decision if The Late Show is leading in ratings?” The show’s host referred to an alleged anonymous tip to the New York Post, stating that the program might have lost around $50 million per year. This hinted that some of these funds were possibly used for the $16 million settlement paid by CBS’s parent company to Trump earlier this month.

The settlement of the lawsuit concerning the 60 Minutes interview between Trump and Kamala Harris, which he claimed was misedited, addressed his dispute. Previously, Colbert humorously called it a “large, generous payment,” suggesting CBS might be trying to appease Trump to facilitate approval for its merger with Skydance Media by the government.

Outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, a group of supporters rallied, shouting “Trump out, keep Colbert!” Their call, along with Colbert’s own stance, made it evident that Stephen Colbert is not yielding to any pressure.
