As a die-hard Steelers fan who’s seen more than a few seasons of football, I can’t help but feel a pang of worry whenever one of our key players gets injured. The latest casualty is none other than Alex Highsmith, our tenacious outside linebacker who seems to have developed a knack for getting hurt just as we need him the most.
In their game against the Washington Commanders, the Pittsburgh Steelers enjoyed a tough-fought win. Unfortunately, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith suffered an ankle injury during play, which could impact his future participation. Towards the end of the game, Highsmith was injured and there is concern about how this might affect the Steelers’ defensive setup in the coming matches. Many fans and experts are eager to learn more details about Highsmith’s injury and its potential consequences for the Steelers’ defense.
Here is everything to know about the same.
How did Alex Highsmith get injured?
During Week 10, the Pittsburgh Steelers edged out the Washington Commanders with a score of 28-27. Yet, towards the end of the game, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith got injured on his ankle while making a tackle on Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels. In the process, Highsmith accidentally stepped on Daniels’ foot, causing his ankle to twist and prompting him to leave the field.
Following the match, Coach Mike Tomlin didn’t provide any initial information about Highsmith’s health status. Later reports from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette showed him using crutches in the locker room. (As reported by Sporting News)
Highsmith’s dad verified that his boy had sustained an ankle injury, but details about the exact nature of the injury weren’t disclosed.
Terrific victory today for the Black and Gold! We appreciate everyone expressing concern about Alex. All I can share at this point is that it’s an ankle injury, and we should have more information by tomorrow or Wednesday. Keep your fingers crossed for a swift healing process!

After the occurrence, it was clear that the Steelers linebacker was in distress, and he needed assistance to leave the field without putting any pressure on his hurt limb, which appeared to be his leg. Notably, Highsmith had previously been sidelined due to a groin injury sustained in Week 3, leading him to miss multiple games this season.
When will Alex Highsmith return to play for Pittsburgh Steelers?
It’s unclear when Alex Highsmith will be back, as the severity of his current ankle injury is yet to be defined. This uncertainty could pose a significant challenge for the team, given that he’s already sat out three matches this season due to a prior injury.
Luckily, the Steelers have bolstered their defensive unit by recruiting edge rusher Preston Smith, whose influence is already evident. Moreover, outside linebacker Nick Herbig could make a comeback shortly following his absence due to a hamstring injury.
