As a dedicated fan who’s journeyed through the annals of historical fiction for years, I must admit, I was taken aback by Starz’s decision to part ways with “The Serpent Queen.” Just when I thought I could bask in the afterglow of the season finale, this bombshell hits us!
It’s bad news for The Serpent Queen fans. Starz has opted to cancel the series after two seasons.
The decision comes just over a month after the second season finale aired. It is certainly disappointing news, and it wasn’t an easy decision for Starz, according to TVLine.
Why is The Serpent Queen canceled?
The reason behind Starz’s cancellation may primarily be financial, considering that producing historical fiction series can be costly, and they require a large audience to watch. Unfortunately, Starz does not have the same viewership as channels like HBO or Netflix to support such high-budget productions.
Despite this, Starz persists in its efforts, understanding that it’s the period dramas that attract viewers. Furthermore, the network was pleased with how well the second season finale resonated with fans.
A Serpent Queen spin-off series may be in the works
There’s a possibility that “The Serpent Queen” could have its own spin-off, focusing on Queen Elizabeth I portrayed by Minnie Driver. It seems clear that viewers have grown fond of her character and are eager for more – much like the response to shows set in this era often is. For example, just take a look at “Reign”!
Among the monarchs during that era, Elizabeth is undoubtedly the one most recognized. She was the trailblazer who demonstrated unequivocally that a woman can rule just as effectively as a man. Furthermore, it was under her reign that her royal lineage came to an end.
Apart from Driver returning to her character, it’s also been announced that Justin Haythe and Erwin Stoff will continue as executive producers in the upcoming spin-off series. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date, but given the time required for period dramas to complete production, we might expect it on Starz around 2026.
The Serpent Queen is available to stream on Starz.
