Starz Cancels The Serpent Queen After 2 Seasons, Queen Elizabeth Spin-off in Development

As a dedicated fan who has followed Catherine de Medici’s tumultuous journey through The Serpent Queen since its inception, I must confess, I am left with a bittersweet feeling following the news of its cancellation after two captivating seasons. Samantha Morton’s portrayal of Catherine de Medici was nothing short of mesmerizing, and I found myself eagerly awaiting each new episode to unravel the intricate web of power struggles, conflicts, and betrayals that defined Catherine’s rule.

The television show “The Serpent Queen,” featuring Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, has been terminated at Starz following two seasons. This historical series portrayed Catherine, who was the Queen of France during the mid-1500s. The news about its cancellation emerged two months after the Season 2 finale aired in August.

Rather than delving into a third season, the series will shift focus to a spin-off that revolves around Queen Elizabeth I. As reported by Deadline, the creative duo behind The Serpent Queen – writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and Erwin Stoff – are set to create a spin-off about Queen Elizabeth for Starz.

In the process of selecting actors for the upcoming spin-off, Minnie Driver appeared as Elizabeth I in The Serpent Queen Season 2 as a guest star. It’s anticipated that she will take on the same character again in the spin-off production.

Who was Involved in The Serpent Queen?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: “I’m deeply immersed in ‘The Serpent Queen’, which is inspired by Leonie Frieda’s 2004 historical narrative, Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. This captivating series was crafted by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment, keeping me hooked!

According to the logline for Season 2 of Starz, “Catherine’s reign encounters power battles, internal strife, and deceit as she strives for unity within France. The strength of her rule is put to the test.

I had the pleasure of watching “The Serpent Queen,” where Amrita Acharia brought Aabis to life, Barry Atsma portrayed Montmorency, Enzo Cilenti played Cosimo Ruggeri, Sennia Nanua embodied Rahima, and Kiruna Stamell captured Mathilde’s character.

In television production, Haythe teamed up with Stoff, Stacie Passon, and Francis Lawrence as executive producers to create The Serpent Queen.

The first season debuted in September 2022, and then came the second season in July 2024. Each series had eight episodes. The second season finale depicted the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572, which claimed the lives of many. According to Deadline, the executives at Starz thought that the massacre served as a fitting conclusion for Catherine’s tale for viewers.

All 16 episodes of The Serpent Queen are now available on Starz.
