Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions features bite-sized co-op adventures

For nearly a decade, Astroneer has been holding players spellbound. The dedicated team at System Era Softworks ensures the game remains engaging with regular updates, even releasing an expansion towards the end of last year. Yet, in addition to maintaining Astroneer’s success, System Era Softworks is exploring new avenues for players to experience this universe. One such venture is Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions, which offers a fresh perspective on their popular game, and I had the opportunity to preview it at PAX West this year.

Initially unveiled during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation earlier this year, Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions offers a unique twist compared to the regular Astroneer gameplay. Unlike the standard version that emphasizes survival, construction, and crafting, Starseeker leans more towards action-packed experiences. Its primary focus is on short, cooperative adventures designed for you and your friends to enjoy together. Given its nature, a multiplayer mode that supports up to four players is almost essential to explore the Starseeker universe because each player possesses unique weapons and tools. Furthermore, each session in this game comes with a time limit, ensuring teams know precisely how long their mission will last.

During the demonstration, only Joe Tirado (System Era Softworks Senior Community Manager/Shacknews alumni) and I were present, thus showcasing just two primary tools. While my colleague utilized a terrain-sculpting vacuum tool, I was equipped with a water hose for multiple purposes – warding off aggressive wildlife, creating temporary waterfalls, and clearing sticky messes that seemed to be everywhere. These messes were prevalent even on useful field equipment and occasionally sprayed onto the team. The water hose proved essential in removing this grime, ensuring the functionality of the gear and preventing our progress from being hindered.

Collaboration among teams can often simplify tasks like reactivating distant equipment, but challenges are bound to arise nonetheless. In this specific mission, our goal was to reactivate an equipment set, but a vital sensor was missing. This necessitated climbing mountains, digging tunnels, and safely descending after retrieving the required items. Teamwork was also crucial in defending against dangerous creatures. A unique strategy could combine players armed with an electricity blaster and water hose, allowing them to simultaneously subdue multiple foes. However, during our mission, the water hose demonstrated effectiveness on its own, putting wild animals to sleep upon splashing them. At one instance, we found ourselves in a precarious situation when the mountain became overcrowded. In response, we jumped off its side and used our glider wings to gradually descend to safety.

An intriguing aspect of this dynamic world is that numerous teams will simultaneously navigate through the same server during their individual missions. Alterations made to a planet’s landscape during a mission persist throughout subsequent missions, regardless of whether someone used a vacuum gun to carve a mountain side or another player employed a terrain blaster to construct a useful bridge. Similarly, these changes remain evident for other teams as they pursue their objectives.

A Brief Look at Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions – A Cooperative Multiplayer Game

Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions is an innovative multiplayer-only game set within the universe designed by System Era Softworks.

While it might be challenging to coordinate long play sessions with friends due to scheduling conflicts, Starseeker promises shorter, manageable sessions of approximately 20-30 minutes each. These expeditions seem suitable for weekly gaming nights with friends.

The game is expected to have additional features, which System Era Softworks and publisher Devolver Digital plan to discuss in more detail within the following months. Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

The gameplay shown here is from an early version played at PAX West 2025, which may be different when the final version is released.
