Eric ‘Concerned Ape’ Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley, might find himself overwhelmed by success following the release of the adored farming game. Despite constant efforts to move on and develop fresh updates for it, he has been unable to let go. However, in an effort to focus on his upcoming project, Haunted Chocolatier, Barone has assured fans that no more Stardew Valley updates will be released until this new game is launched.
In an interview with PCGamer during GDC, Barone shared that the commitment towards Stardew Valley and the desire to engage with its highly active fanbase constantly beckons him, much like a charming, pixelated siren call. Yet, this dedication to the game is hindering the advancement of his fresh and exhilarating new project.
The creator expressed that they truly cherish Stardew Valley, value its fans, and aim for an exceptional gaming experience. To ensure this, they are constantly monitoring Stardew Valley’s performance, which in turn, limits their full dedication to Haunted Chocolatier.
“I’m committed to not working on Stardew Valley until I’m done with Haunted Chocolatier.”
STARDEW VALLEY CREATOR ERIC ‘CONCERNEDAPE’ BARONE
For most part of the previous year, Haunted Chocolatier took a step back in favor of Stardew Valley 1.6, an extensive update for the game across PC, consoles, and mobile devices. Despite Barone receiving help from one of the community’s leading modders, ensuring the game was free of bugs and playable on every platform remained a significant hurdle.
Recognizing the significant amount of time he had invested in Chocolatier, Barone has decided to focus solely on completing it before its release, thereby temporarily stepping back from Stardew Valley. Nevertheless, there is an eagerness to offer additional content for Stardew Valley players following the new game’s launch.
As I keep getting sucked back into the charming world of Stardew Valley, Barone shared an insight about the challenges in crafting our next game: it’s not just fresh ideas we’re working on, but also revisiting and refining old ones. Being a one-man team means every new game requires an enormous investment of my time.
He pointed out that one of the challenges in being a solo developer is the lengthy process involved in creating a game. Over the course of four years, he’s transformed into an entirely different person, so his perspective and artistic tastes have significantly shifted as well.
Baron playfully suggested that he might seclude himself in a forest cabin, completely disconnecting from the internet, to solely concentrate on the new game until it’s fully developed.
Although Barone might be temporarily stepping away from Stardew Valley, the game continues to thrive due to fantastic mods created by enthusiastic fans. They’re constructing entire villages reminiscent of Baldur’s Gate 3, introducing fresh mysteries and numerous small enhancements. Essentially, it’s a game that will never cease to evolve.
