Stardew Valley creator admits the game’s minigame is “too hard” – “a lot of people hate it, but I think it’s fun”

After announcing his decision to dedicate all his time to a new project called Haunted Chocolatier, the mastermind behind Stardew Valley, Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, acknowledges that the fishing aspect in Stardew Valley might be “difficultly challenging”.

Over the years since Stardew Valley was first launched, numerous enthusiasts have expressed frustration, vented, and possibly shed tears as they tried their hand at fishing within the game. In fact, there’s a mod called “Skip Fishing Minigame” that has garnered nearly 2.5 million downloads on Nexus Mods, indicating just how exasperated some fans can become.

Why Stardew Valley fishing is so hard

During a recent conversation with PCG, Barone expressed his views on the mini-game that has sparked some debate. Although some players might find themselves astonished and enraged like a cartoon character, Barone sees it as simply entertaining.

The creator of Stardew Valley stated that they enjoy the mini-games related to fishing within the game and expressed their appreciation for Stardew Valley’s own fishing minigame. Despite the fact that many individuals dislike it, they find it entertaining.

Barone admitted that he wishes he hadn’t made the minigame as challenging as it turned out to be. In contrast to most games, which gradually introduce a new mechanism gently, Stardew Valley starts off with a tough challenge and improves over time for the player. If given another chance—once he completes his current project—he would make the initial fishing experience less stressful.

Barone expressed his disappointment that the difficulty level in Stardew Valley’s fishing minigame might be too high at first, suggesting a more gradual progression where it begins easy and gradually becomes tougher as you catch harder fish. He felt that he would have preferred a larger starting bar, making it less intimidating at the outset. However, overall, Barone still finds the fishing game enjoyable.

Baron further clarified that the challenging mini-game for fishing is responsible for the inclusion of the training rod item in the game, which players can purchase. Yet, it seems many of the game’s vast player base are unaware of this feature’s existence.

The creator of Stardew Valley mentioned that many people dislike a particular aspect, so they introduced a training rod as a solution. This item is available for purchase at Willy’s shop for around five gold. It simplifies fishing, but it’s important to note that you can only catch fish within a specific tier and quality with the training rod. However, it serves as an excellent tool for leveling up your skills. Once you upgrade to the standard rod, your progress bar will be significantly larger due to this training.

The mini-game for fishing in Stardew Valley consistently brings delight to my companion, though it sometimes leaves me quite frazzled. Still, I’m glad it’s part of the game because it puts a smile on her face. Thanks, ConcernedApe!
