Kathleen Kennedy, who’s in charge at Lucasfilm, shared in a recent chat that Simon Kinberg’s planned Star Wars series will carry on the storyline beyond the Skywalker saga. Back in November, there were whispers that the studio had tapped Kinberg, known for his work on Dark Phoenix, to script and direct a three-part Star Wars cinematic journey within the galaxy.
Kathleen Kennedy says Simon Kingberg’s Star Wars trilogy will follow the main story after Episode IX
The head of Lucasfilm clarified the sequence of Simon Kinberg’s trilogy in relation to the broader Star Wars saga.
According to an interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy stated that Lucasfilm is actively working on these upcoming projects at a rapid pace. She further added that the progress has been outstanding, and they are currently drafting the scripts. We can expect some updates possibly by June.
Kennedy highlighted the past collaboration between Kinberg and Lucasfilm, specifically his role as creator, executive producer, and writer on Star Wars Rebels, which ran from 2014 to 2018 on Disney XD. She described it as a “wonderful collaborative experience.” Later, she mentioned that Kinberg has been occupied with the X-Men projects but is now available again. She seamlessly transitioned into this new role and we’re eagerly anticipating what the future holds.
When asked if these films are spin-offs or continuations of the main Star Wars storyline divided into trilogies, Kathleen Kennedy explained that they represent “the next phase, a new saga taking us forward.” It’s worth mentioning that Simon Kinberg was involved in providing creative guidance for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), which marked the beginning of the sequel trilogy.
In November 2024, the same media outlet had previously covered Matthew Kinberg’s upcoming Star Wars films. Initially, an article stated that these movies would serve as Episodes 10 to 12 of the Skywalker Saga. Yet, it was also suggested that industry sources disputed this claim and proposed a new saga in a similar style to the projects led by James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Donald Glover within the Star Wars universe.
