Following the triumph of Andor, there’s been much talk among fans about whether Gareth Edwards, Rogue One’s director, might return to guide another Star Wars production. However, it seems that this British filmmaker has no intention of returning to a distant galaxy.
What did Gareth Edwards say about a possible Star Wars return?
Currently, Edwards is actively publicizing his latest directorial project titled Jurassic World Rebirth. During an interview with Business Insider, he expressly ruled out any plans for revisiting the Star Wars universe and creating another film.
“I’m very happy to move on and do my thing,” Edwards said.
For quite some time now, I’ve been intrigued by the backstage tale of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It’s rumored that Lucasfilm enlisted Tony Gilroy to supervise five weeks worth of additional filming. Gilroy not only penned extra scenes but also took on the role of a secondary director, ultimately redefining the movie’s conclusion.
To what extent did Edwards’ original concept for Rogue One make it into the final version of the film? Was Gilroy responsible for more changes than initially thought? These questions are still undetermined. Despite the ongoing debate about who had a larger impact on the movie, Rogue One was met with critical acclaim upon its release and this praise has only grown in the years since.
Some people now view “Rogue One” as one of the finest Star Wars films made since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, but director Gareth Edwards has a different opinion on it.
Edwards expressed disagreement but acknowledged appreciation, stating, ‘It’s not something I concur with, but I’m truly thankful for the kind words.’
In simpler terms, the film “Rogue One” focuses on a team of brave rebels who aim to obtain the blueprints for the Death Star. The movie’s popularity sparked the creation of “Andor,” a prequel series on Disney+ that centers around the character Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One.

Next year signifies the 10th anniversary of Rogue One. Initially reluctant to direct another Star Wars film, Edwards acknowledges that the movie continues to elicit a strong response from viewers even after a decade.
Edwards pointed out that as you move forward with creating other films, remember that it’s not just about people’s initial reactions upon release; rather, it’s about how they feel about the film years down the line. In essence, when making a movie, you’re essentially peering into the future, trying to envision what decisions you make now will be like once your movie is out, and how the audience will perceive it then.
As the film is released, you might find yourself saying, “I’ll imagine myself ten years into the future, where it won’t matter what others think right now. If a child approaches me twenty years later, excitedly telling me they loved that movie, that’s the reward I’ll cherish.
Rogue One is available to stream on Disney+.
