Star Wars Fans Sign Petition for The Acolyte Season 2

As a passionate Star Wars fan who has followed the saga since the original trilogy, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing about the petition to renew “The Acolyte” for a second season. The series, although criticized by some, opened doors and provided representation that many fans, including myself, have been yearning for in the Star Wars universe.

Initially, “The Acolyte” premiered on Disney Plus from June 4, 2024, to July 16, 2024. Despite a 78% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience reactions were quite polarized. Recently, Lucasfilm decided not to renew the series for another season, leading fans to start an online petition in hopes of keeping it alive.

Star Wars fans petition to renew The Acolyte Season 2 with almost 20,000 signatures

On August 20th, a Change.org petition was started to bring back The Acolyte for a second season. By Friday, it had amassed close to 20,000 signatures, with more still pouring in.

As stated in the petition, “The Acolyte series has given numerous Star Wars enthusiasts, both old and new, a sense of belonging. It has made them feel recognized and accepted by a franchise and community that hadn’t been inclusive to those who didn’t fit specific criteria before. Moreover, The Acolyte serves as a symbol for representation that many fans believe was missing in the Star Wars universe for quite some time.”

The argument continues by asserting that Leslye Headland, the mastermind behind the series, along with the cast members, had a deep understanding of the Star Wars universe. Additionally, they criticized what seems to be the practice of review bombing, which occurred apparently due to the show being labeled as “woke.”

The Acolyte has received generally unfavorable reviews on various platforms like IMDb and Metacritic. After its termination, publications such as The Hollywood Reporter pointed towards poor audience ratings being a significant factor in Lucasfilm’s choice not to revive the series for another season.

As someone who’s passionate about “The Acolyte,” I can see that there’s a significant number of us who feel the same way, given the petition and its growing list of signatures. It’s heartening to know that there are instances where studios have reconsidered their decisions to cancel shows, like S.W.A.T. and Jericho. So, while it’s still uncertain whether our collective voice will sway the studio’s decision, we can hold onto hope for “The Acolyte” to return. After all, the Season 1 finale leaves a tantalizing narrative thread for the story to continue, and Headland has expressed her desire to explore another season. Here’s to hoping that our love for the show will find its way into the studio’s plans!
