Benicio del Toro clarified that he never played the role of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, putting an end to longstanding rumors about his involvement with the film. Since the release of the first prequel trilogy movie in 1999, fans have been speculating that the Academy Award-winning actor walked away from the project, but now we can say for certain that he was not cast as Darth Maul.
The Phoenician Scheme’s Benicio del Toro didn’t reject Darth Maul role
In a recent interview, an actor from “The Usual Suspects” was questioned about whether he declined the role of Darth Maul after originally accepting to play the powerful Sith character in Star Wars. However, the experienced actor stated that he doesn’t remember ever agreeing to take on such a role.
In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Benicio del Toro about rumors that he was initially offered or even cast as Darth Maul in one of the Star Wars prequel movies by George Lucas, but the role was reduced and they ultimately parted ways. Is there any truth to this?
In a recent interview, the actor from Guardians of the Galaxy said, “Actually, I can’t recall that incident, though it’s worth mentioning that my memory isn’t perfect. I only remember being chosen for one other Star Wars film, which is the one I was indeed cast in.
As an ardent fan, I’ve heard whispers that Guillermo del Toro was initially set to play Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. But after George Lucas rewrote the film’s script, the character was reduced to only five lines, which made del Toro step back from the project. Instead, Ray Park, a relatively unknown stuntman at the time, snatched the role and brought Darth Maul to life on the big screen.
Well, I’ve got some news for you all, straight from the horse’s mouth – or should I say, Benicio del Toro’s! In a recent chat, he set the record straight about those rumors swirling around that he was part of the casting process for Star Wars: Episode 1. Turns out, it wasn’t so. But fear not, Star Wars fans, because this Puerto Rican actor eventually got his shot at stardom in our beloved galaxy far, far away. Fast forward to 2017, and there he was, playing the cunning DJ in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – a role that definitely left its mark!
