Star Citizen devs seemingly hiring for Squadron 42 console port on Xbox Series and PS5

It appears that Squadron 42, which represents the single-player aspect of the ongoing development for the multiplayer space simulation game Star Citizen, may be making its way onto current or upcoming console generations.

Initially unveiled back in 2012, Squadron 42 is slated to debut in the year 2026, making its way onto PC platforms first. Interestingly, Cloud Imperium Games has started recruiting experienced console developers for this highly anticipated single-player game.

Is Squadron 42 bringing Star Citizen to console?

Online, two job postings for Cloud Imperium Games have been noticed by fans, hinting at the imminent release of their single-player cinematic spin-off on consoles.

The job advertisement for a Cinematics Animator at the studio in Frankfurt, CIG, seeks an individual who has worked professionally in game animation production, preferably on modern or upcoming gaming consoles.

For the cinematics animator role at the game development studio located in Manchester, England, the identical job description is also applied for another vacancy.

Initially, when Star Citizen was unveiled in 2012, the developers expressed their intention to release the game on consoles. Yet, at that time, the console’s hardware lacked the necessary power to accommodate the large-scale space simulator. During that period, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 represented the latest generation of gaming hardware.

As an ardent follower of the gaming universe, I’m eagerly anticipating the potential console release of Star Citizen. Despite its current high hardware demands on PCs, I believe it could be optimized for a smooth console experience. However, the challenge lies in how they redesign the control scheme to suit a controller, which is an entirely separate discussion.

2023 saw Squadron 42 being declared fully-featured, showcasing fresh gameplay incorporating spacecraft and first-person combat. The initial glimpse was truly impressive; however, it remains to be seen if Cloud Imperium Games can successfully combine all elements into a captivating single-player adventure.

As I type this, the primary Star Citizen game is yet to be fully developed and a definite release date for version 1.0 has not been announced yet. Fingers crossed, it might indeed become available during our lifetime.
