The chaotic energy, the quirky characters, and the heart-wrenching stories – it all rings true to life.
NBC is attempting a fresh take on workplace comedy through St. Denis Medical, a series designed to serve up the medical drama we hunger for, mixed with humor. Join us as we embark on this journey, following the team at an emergency department in a financially struggling and understaffed Oregon hospital, where both life-saving action and comedic relief can be found.
The medical center is led by an Executive Director with ambitious aspirations. Ambitious, even grandiose ones. Passionate, one might say. Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) aims to transform their community hospital, a place that offers care to anyone who needs it regardless of insurance or financial status, into a globally recognized medical center. She has a large-scale model to back up her vision.
Based on the initial four-minute preview released by NBC, it appears that Alex (Allison Tolman) may not be able to meet her 5-10 year goal of achieving this milestone through her current role. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t due to a lack of dedication within the workforce. Instead, Alex seems unusually patient as she navigates difficult situations with drug-dependent patients who frequently return and another who insists on wearing his hospital gown open at the front, exposing his backside.
Among her colleagues, Alex is quite lively. Serena (Kahyun Kim), whom you could call her work partner, shows excessive excitement about the arrival of the new nurse from Montana. Additionally, there’s Ron (David Alan Grier), an emergency room doctor who frequently uses food delivery services. He’s got a gift card he’s willing to share with everyone.
In the premiere episode, it seems the storyline may revolve around whether Alex will manage to leave work on time for her children’s performance. Since she’s supposed to go home at 4:00 PM, but often prioritizes her patients over personal matters, there’s a good chance she’ll be late.
