The South Korean series titled “Squid Game,” which delves into topics like class disparity, greed, indifference, and capitalism, was initially aired on Netflix on September 17, 2021. This gripping show paints a chilling picture of an unforgiving, ruthless society that remains the same even in Season 2, released on December 26, 2024. In a recent interview, actress Jo Yu-ri, who portrays Jun-hee / Player 222, hinted that Season 3 would be exceptionally severe and heartless.
Jo Yu-ri teases Squid Game Season 3’s cruel story
Jo Yu-ri hinted at the bleak storyline that fans could expect in the third and final season of Squid Game during an interview. “It seems like a lot of people have been predicting the contents of Season 3, but it seems like not many of them have gotten it right as I thought,” she observed, before adding, “A truly unimaginably brutal and cruel story awaits, so please look forward to it.” (via Cinema Today)
The conclusion of Season 2 is heartbreakingly sad. (Spoiler alert) The character known as Player 001 (portrayed by Lee Byung-hun), who controls the games and is their mastermind, betrays his fellow players. As the season comes to a close, the main character, Seong Gi-hun (also played by Lee Jung-jae), the winner of the past games and central figure of the series, is captured, while his friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) is executed by Player 001.
As a dedicated gamer, if what Jo Yu-ri hints at is true, the stakes are going to be higher when Squid Game makes its grand return for season 3. Though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed a release date, whispers from the streaming giant point towards an anticipated premiere on June 27, 2025 – mark your calendars!
Significantly, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the original creator of the project, had attempted to sell it to multiple production companies without success. Over a decade passed before Netflix showed interest in turning it into a television series. After its debut, the first season of this survival drama was one of the most-viewed TV seasons on Netflix ever. The second season has also been incredibly popular, fueling excitement for the upcoming finale of the show.
