As a dedicated gamer, I recently watched the grand finale of Squid Game Season 3, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of spectacular! Not only did it draw the curtain on this phenomenal Netflix series, but it also wrapped up a crucial character’s storyline in a way that truly resonated with me.
In the final episode of Squid Game, Lee Jung-jae’s character Seong Gi-hun made the selfless choice to give up his life for another, leaving viewers curious about why Gi-hun chose to die at the end. However, any doubts fans might have had were put to rest when series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk clarified his reasons for ending the show’s main character in a recent interview.
Hwang Dong-hyuk explains Seong Gi-hun’s death in finale
During a conversation with Netflix, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the surprising ending of Seong Gi-hun’s character in Squid Game. Originally, he hadn’t intended for Gi-hun to perish, but ultimately chose to have him die in the series finale as a fitting conclusion, wrapping up not only the game but also Gi-hun’s personal journey.
Discussing the surprising conclusion of Squid Game Season 3, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed that his intention was to convey the idea that if we only focus on our personal gains, refuse to make sacrifices or take on costs, and fail to cooperate with others, we have no hope for a future.
Later on, he elaborated further about Seong Gi-hun’s decision to die in the final episode, stating, “The selfless act of Gi-hun saving the baby symbolizes a crucial lesson for us today. This character, who was forced into the game, suffered through every ordeal, and ultimately reentered it to bring it to an end, is the one who embodies this message.
In the closing scenes of the popular South Korean drama, Lee Jung-jae’s character sacrificed his life to protect Jun-hee’s infant. Even though the shocking finale wrapped up the storyline revolving around Seong Gi-hun, it doesn’t mean the end for the Squid Game universe as a complete concept. Presently, David Fincher is engaged in creating an American adaptation of the series, although there’s no confirmed date set for its release.
