As a die-hard fan who has binged-watched Squid Game multiple times and even lost count of how many red suits I own, the news about season 2 coming to Netflix this December and the series already being renewed for a third and final season in 2025 is like winning my very own game.
The Squid Game season 2 release date is set at Netflix!
For several months, we’ve been anticipating the release of Squid Game season 2 on Netflix during December. The lead actor, Lee Jung-jae (who plays Seong Gi-hun in the most-watched Netflix series ever), has confirmed that the next season will debut in December.
It’s no surprise that Squid Game season 2 is set for a Christmas release on Netflix. In fact, it’s become a tradition for Netflix to unveil a fresh series around this time of year. Shows like Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, You, The Witcher, and many others have been premiered during the holiday season. So, don’t be surprised if you see Squid Game season 2 on your screen as well!
It’s fair to assume that the second season of Squid Game will garner even greater popularity than other shows, given that over 2.2 billion viewing hours have been recorded for it on Netflix as of July 28, surpassing the initial 1.6 billion hours watched during its first few weeks on the platform.
Netflix also shared the synopsis for the new season in the press release:
Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.
For the upcoming season, Jung-jae will be reunited with actors Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, as per the announcement for season 2 of the series. Additionally, several new faces are set to join “Squid Game” in its second season (and potentially a third if they make it through!), including Park Gyu-young, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jin-uk, Yim Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, and more.

Squid Game renewed for third and final season
As reported by Netflix, the hit show “Squid Game” is indeed set for a third season. However, here’s a piece of disappointing news for fans: The third season will serve as the last chapter of the Netflix Original Series.
Netflix additionally revealed a message penned by Hwang Dong-hyuk, indicating that another season is on its way for the Squid Game series, marking the conclusion to the tale.
In June, it was reported by OSEN (a South Korean outlet) that the filming for seasons 2 and 3 had already been wrapped up. This was one of the earliest pieces of news suggesting both seasons were in production and completed. As it turned out, this report proved to be accurate.
According to the recent announcement in their press release, Netflix has indeed planned to release the third season of Squid Game in 2025. This is certainly exciting news as we haven’t seen a new season since the initial release back in 2021, making us eagerly await another three years for its return.
Furthermore, this information is particularly thrilling as it means that three of Netflix’s most successful series – Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday – will all release new seasons in the year 2025.
