As a devoted fan who has eagerly binged every episode of Squid Game since its debut, I must say that I was initially taken aback by the sudden ending of Season 2. However, after reflecting on Hwang Dong-hyuk’s words and considering my own experience with the series, I now understand and appreciate his decision.
The first season was a masterful blend of suspense, action, and emotional depth that kept me on the edge of my seat. The second season continued this trend, but with a darker, more intense narrative that pushed our favorite characters to their limits. The climax of Season 2, while tragic, felt like a fitting conclusion to this chapter of Gi-hun’s journey.
I find it fascinating that Hwang wrote Seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously, producing them concurrently. This approach allowed him to maintain the intricate plotlines and character arcs that make Squid Game so compelling. I am excited about the upcoming Season 3, knowing that it will delve further into Gi-hun’s character arc, particularly after his failure in leading the players’ revolt and the immense guilt he must carry.
As for a joke to lighten the mood, I can’t help but wonder if Hwang is secretly working on a spinoff series called “Squid Game: The Aftermath,” starring Gi-hun as a game host with an uncontrollable guilt complex! It could be a real rollercoaster of emotions!
The premiere of Squid Game on Netflix took place on September 17, 2021, and it consisted of nine captivating episodes. At that time, it gained immense popularity worldwide, turning into a cultural sensation. Two years later, on December 26, 2024, the second season was released, maintaining its success. Unfortunately, episode 7 served as the conclusion for this season. In a recent interview, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, shared his reasons for producing fewer episodes this time around.
Hwang Dong-hyuk explains why Squid Game Season 2 Episode 7 was the finale
During a chat with Deadline, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed the reason behind ending Squid Game Season 2 after just seven episodes, as opposed to the initial run of nine. Additionally, he shared some exciting news regarding the potential third season.
In an interesting twist, Hwang mentioned that he penned seasons two and three concurrently, and filming for both was happening at the same time. Now, we’re working on the post-production stage for season 3.
The screenwriter shared that he believed the narrative had reached a significant turning point following the conclusion of the seventh episode, leading him to determine this juncture as the most suitable spot for a pause. Consequently, he initially planned the first seven episodes as Season 2 and the remainder as Season 3.
Hwang explained to CinemaBlend that his initial intention was to conclude both Season 2 and Season 3 storylines within a single series, but as the specifics of Seong Gi-hun’s (played by Lee Jung-jae) post-game journey unfolded, it became increasingly difficult to do so.
During our chat, I shared why I chose to pause my journey at Episode 7. To be honest, the second season concludes with the heartbreaking collapse of the rebellion we players were leading, under the command of Gi-hun. Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned that ending it there “feels like the perfect time for a breather, allowing the story to continue in future seasons since after Gi-hun experiences that life-altering event and feeling of guilt, we’ll get another layer to his character.
Squid Game Season 3 can debut sometime in the summer or fall of 2025 (via Variety).
