Additionally, he touched upon the unique aspects of Thanos and their role in the narrative.
Hwang Dong-hyuk on why Squid Game Season 2’s Player 230 was called Thanos
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mind behind Squid Game, revealed that he chose the name “Thanos” for one of the Season 2 characters in an attempt to attract a worldwide audience, as this name is well-known from the Marvel villain.
During an interview with Netflix, Hwang explained that he chose to name the character Thanos because it wasn’t typically associated with rappers. He wanted to create a character that fans worldwide could adore. And, he expressed his gratitude for all the love Thanos is receiving. The unique aspects of Thanos, such as his purple hair and nail polish resembling the Infinity Stones, strengthen the connection to the Marvel universe.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been following the career of Choi Seung-hyun, the man behind Thanos. You might remember that nine years ago, he was embroiled in a marijuana scandal in Korea, which led to him being unable to work on any projects there for nearly a decade. Interestingly, the character of Thanos, portrayed as a chaotic rapper with troubled drug associations, seems to echo some aspects of Choi’s real-life experiences.
Hwang recognized the bravery it took for Choi to accept this role, stating that “it required a great deal of courage, in essence, to embody a character who bears many resemblances to him, some of which are quite unfavorable.” Despite Choi’s break from the industry, Hwang was pleased with his performance, expressing that as a director, he found Choi’s acting “impressive” and “satisfied” with how he brought the character to life.
In Season 2, Thanos takes on a major antagonistic part, stirring up turmoil throughout the lethal competitions. His involvement significantly heightened the uncertainty level for the entire season.
